What to pack for New England in October
October is fall foliage season in New England, when the hills of Vermont, New Hampshire and Maine turn red, orange and gold. Peak color arrives in the north in early October and moves south through the month. Days are crisp and bright, nights are cold, and the first frost is common inland.
So the list is built on warm, cozy layers for a road trip through small towns, farm stands and hiking trails. Flannel, sweaters and a good jacket cover most days. The region is casual, and a clean sweater and jeans work for dinner at nearly any country inn.

Gear worth the space
A quilted jacket
Warm enough for a crisp morning, light enough for a hike, and right at home at a country inn.
Waterproof boots
Orchards, farm stands and trails are muddy after rain, and a good pair of boots looks right all day.
A chunky cardigan
The layer you reach for by the fire in the evening and on a cool drive with the window down.
A tote bag
For apples, cider donuts and all the small-town shopping you did not plan on doing.
A 60°F afternoon can fall to near freezing after dark. Packlier packs your October layers to match.
