What to pack for Istanbul in May
May is one of the loveliest months in Istanbul. The city is green, the tulips are fading into early summer, and afternoons are warm and sunny. Evenings are cooler, especially on the water, and the breeze on a Bosphorus ferry can feel chilly.
So the list is built on light layers, with a few modest pieces for the mosques. Visitors are welcome in most of them outside prayer times, but women need to cover their hair, shoulders and knees, men need long pants, and everyone takes their shoes off. The old city is hilly and cobbled, so comfortable shoes matter.

A light trench
Smart, breezy-day protection that looks right in a rooftop restaurant.
A zip-top crossbody bag

A Bosphorus ferry breeze feels chilly on a warm May afternoon. Packlier packs for that, and for the mosques.
